Grubhub started in Chicago in 2004 as a way to stop phoning restaurants for takeout, merged with New York's Seamless in 2013, and now carries restaurants in 3,200 US cities across all fifty states. It is the oldest of the big American delivery marketplaces and still the one with the deepest bench of independent neighbourhood restaurants — diners, taquerias and dumpling houses that never signed with anyone else. Just Eat Takeaway sold the business to Wonder Group in a $650 million deal that closed in 2025.

A gift card here is account credit, not a coupon: the code loads onto the Grubhub account and is applied automatically at each checkout until it runs out. Because Seamless runs on the same platform and the same login, a New Yorker who orders through Seamless and a friend who orders through Grubhub are spending the same balance. The credit covers the order total rather than the food line alone, so taxes and the delivery and service fees are drawn from it too, and any shortfall goes to the payment method on the account.

It also stacks with Grubhub+, the $0-delivery-fee membership — and Grubhub+ has been included with an Amazon Prime membership in the US since 2024, so a large share of American households already hold it without paying for it. Member or not, the gift-card balance is spent the same way; the membership just removes the delivery fee first and makes the balance last longer. Beyond consumer delivery, Grubhub runs campus dining at US universities on the Tapingo platform it bought in 2018.

Two constraints before you pay. This is a United States card: Grubhub does not operate a consumer marketplace outside the US, and the balance is tied to a US account. And the reverse of the note a restaurant card carries applies here too — a restaurant's own gift card cannot be entered as payment inside Grubhub. Marketplace credit and restaurant credit are two different things, and neither substitutes for the other.
