About this card
Wine.com has been selling wine online since 1998 and is the largest retailer of its kind in the United States, listing tens of thousands of labels — everything from everyday bottles to allocated wines — alongside a sommelier chat service, ratings and tasting notes on most listings, and StewardShip, the annual membership that covers shipping on qualifying orders. It is a licensed retailer, not a marketplace: the licences it holds state by state are what decide where an order can go.
The card is account credit on that catalogue. The code goes on to a US wine.com account, comes off the order total at checkout — bottles and the shipping charge alike — and any remainder stays on the account for the next order. Codes are single-use and not reloadable, the balance is not exchanged for cash, and it cannot be used to buy another gift card. Under the standard US terms the balance does not expire.
What a gift card does not do is worth stating plainly, because it is the part people get wrong. It is tender, nothing more. The purchaser and the person taking delivery must be 21 or over; an adult signature is required at the door, so a shipment cannot be left unattended or sent to a PO box; and Wine.com can only ship to an address in a state where it is licensed to do so. Several states permit no direct-to-consumer wine shipment at all — Utah and Mississippi among them — and others cap volumes or impose their own paperwork. The checkout enforces this on the delivery address whatever the payment method, so a balance that cannot legally be delivered simply sits unused.
Buying the code here needs no Wine.com account, no card on file and no identity check at our end: a delivery email, the coin you already hold, and it arrives in about eleven minutes once the payment confirms on chain. The age and licensing checks happen at Wine.com, at redemption and at delivery, exactly as they would for any other payment method. Check the destination state before spending the value.
