このカードについて
Kobo is not a shop you walk into — it is a reading ecosystem. Founded in Toronto in 2009 out of Indigo Books & Music and owned by Rakuten since 2012, it pairs a catalogue of more than six million ebooks plus a deep audiobook and comics list with its own e-readers — the Clara, the Libra Colour, the Sage, the Elipsa — and free apps for iOS, Android, Windows and macOS. The devices are the reason people choose it over the obvious alternative: they open ordinary EPUB and PDF files, they take sideloaded DRM-free books without argument, and in the US and Canada they borrow from public libraries through OverDrive at no cost at all.
What this card does is credit a Kobo account. The value sits there as store balance and is drawn down one title at a time as the reader buys — which is a different rhythm from a retail card that gets spent in a single trip. At typical ebook and audiobook prices, a $100 balance is somewhere between fifteen and thirty books rather than one purchase, and it will still be there next winter, because redeemed balance does not expire under the US terms. Two honest boundaries: the credit does not buy Kobo hardware — an e-reader is a separate purchase outside the store balance — and the Kobo Plus subscription is a recurring charge that wants a payment method on file to renew itself, so plan the balance around buying titles outright, which is the thing it reliably does.
Buying it here needs no Kobo account of your own, no card on file and no identity check. You give us a delivery email, pay in the coin you already hold, and the claim code arrives about eleven minutes after the payment confirms on chain. The Kobo account only matters at redemption, and creating one costs nothing more than an email address — which is also how someone outside the US can put credit into an American reader's library.
The constraint that decides whether this is the right gift: the Kobo store is country-specific and the library is bound to the account. Each national storefront has its own catalogue, its own prices and its own publishing rights, so a US card redeems on the US store against a US-region account and an account's region is not something to change casually. Once redeemed, titles bought with the credit carry DRM tied to that account — they open on Kobo e-readers and in the Kobo apps, and they do not move onto a Kindle. Buy this for someone who already reads on Kobo, not for someone who might one day.
