Sport is the other half of the argument. Paramount+ carries the NFL on CBS Sunday slate and the UEFA Champions League, which puts genuinely appointment-viewing live rights behind a subscription that is priced like an archive service. That combination — a franchise catalogue plus live rights the household would otherwise chase elsewhere — is what the card is really funding.

The card is prepaid value applied to the account, and it funds whichever directly billed plan that account is already on. Essential carries ads and does not include your live local CBS station; Premium adds SHOWTIME's catalogue, the live local CBS feed and ad-free on-demand viewing apart from live TV and a handful of titles. The value draws down at that plan's monthly rate — it does not upgrade the tier, and it does not downgrade it either.

The constraint to check before paying is the billing route, not the plan. This works only on subscriptions billed directly by Paramount+. Which plan does the code fund — Essential or Premium?

Either one. The code is prepaid value on the account rather than a specific plan, so it draws down at the rate of whichever directly billed plan the account is already on. What it does not do is change the tier: it will not upgrade an Essential account to Premium, and it will not move a Premium account down. Pick the plan in the account settings first, then redeem.

What is the actual difference between Essential and Premium?

Essential carries advertising and does not include your live local CBS station, though it does include the NFL on CBS games and the UEFA Champions League. Premium adds the SHOWTIME catalogue, gives you the live local CBS feed, and removes ads from on-demand viewing apart from live TV and a small number of titles. Premium also allows downloads for offline viewing.

My subscription is billed through Amazon — can I still use this?

No, and this is the failure we see most often. If Paramount+ was started through Amazon Channels, Apple, Google Play, Roku or a cable or bundle partner, that company collects the money and Paramount+ never sees a billing relationship to credit.
