Subway is the largest restaurant chain on earth by unit count — more than 36,000 restaurants across over 100 countries, of which roughly 20,000 are in the United States and about 3,000 in Canada. It has been franchised almost end to end since Fred DeLuca and Peter Buck opened the first shop in Bridgeport, Connecticut in 1965, and it passed from the founding families to Roark Capital in 2024. What the credit actually buys is the made-to-order counter: six-inch and footlong subs built in front of you, the numbered Subway Series sandwiches, wraps, salads, Sidekicks, and the Footlong Cookie, Churro and Pretzel.

The card itself is plain stored value. It is drawn down at the till over as many visits as it takes, there is no expiry date and no dormancy, service or inactivity fee, and a shortfall on a big order is settled with cash or a bank card. It is also one of the better fast-food cards to hold digitally: add the card number and PIN to the Subway app or a subway.com account as a payment method and it pays for mobile order-ahead and pickup, and spending it still earns Subway MVP Rewards tokens — the programme that replaced Subway MyWay Rewards in 2023. Buying a gift card earns nothing; spending one does.

Two constraints decide whether this is the right card. First, Subway gift cards are issued market by market and are not interchangeable: a card bought for the United States is refused in Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia or anywhere else, so pick the row that matches the country the sandwich gets eaten in. Second, participating is a real word here. Subway is franchise-run almost everywhere, and the non-traditional units — airport concourses, hospital and university food services, in-store counters at Walmart, military bases and highway travel plazas — are often operated by contract caterers on their own tills, which may not take the card. And an order placed inside DoorDash, Uber Eats or Grubhub is paid to the delivery company rather than to Subway, so the card is not an option there; delivery booked through the Subway app is, because you are paying Subway.
