A gift card is a payment method, not a discount, so the merchandise still earns DSW VIP points as long as the account is attached to the sale — signed in online, or the phone number handed over at the register — and that spend still counts toward the Gold and Elite tiers. Reward certificates you have already earned can be applied to the same transaction: the reward comes off the price first, then the gift card settles what is left.

The balance itself behaves like cash on the order. It works on clearance and on full-price stock, it covers tax and shipping, the remainder stays on the card for the next pair, and a shortfall is charged to a second payment method.
