Shell puts its name on roughly 46,000 service stations in more than 70 countries, but it operates almost none of them itself. Forecourts are run by independent dealers, franchisees and — in whole markets — by a licensee company: in Brazil the entire network belongs to Raizen. That structure is why there is no single worldwide Shell card. Each market issues its own, in its own currency, on its own payment rails.

The United States row is the classic forecourt card. It is accepted at participating Shell stations across the 50 states — more than 12,000 sites — and it is not fuel-only: the same balance pays for petrol and diesel, convenience-store merchandise and the car wash. US territories are outside the programme, and the card is not tender for lottery, money orders, other cash-equivalent lines, online orders or bill payment.

Whether it works at an automated pump depends on the format, and this is the detail most listings skip. A plastic Shell card can be inserted at the reader. What we deliver is a code, so to pay outside you add it to the Shell app as a payment method and authorise the pump from the phone; without the app it is a register transaction and the cashier keys the number. Brazil inverts the question — self-service fuelling is illegal there, so no pump reader exists for anybody. An attendant fills the tank and you release the payment inside Shell Box.

Buying it here needs no Shell account, no card on file and no identity check: a delivery email, the coin you already hold, and the code lands in about eleven minutes. Pick the country before you pay, because the lock is real — a US code will not load in Shell Box and a Brazilian one will not run at a US forecourt. Once loaded, the balance carries no expiry date and no dormancy or maintenance fee.
